“At my annual full body skin exam, the melanographer found a small pin-sized spot on my ear and recommended I have it examined further. It turned out to be cancerous. If it wasn’t for MoleMap, it would have gone unnoticed.”

What are the risks for developing skin cancer?

Plus Iconminus Icon

Skin cancer doesn’t discriminate, anyone can get it. Yet, certain factors may put you at higher risk. This includes fair skin, skin that burns easily, having a large number of moles, and a family or personal history of cancer. Learn more about the risk factors for skin cancer or take the Skin Cancer Risk Quiz.

Where’s the best place to go for a skin assessment—a GP, dermatologist, or skin cancer clinic?

minus Iconminus Icon

You’ve noticed a new or strange-looking mole. Or maybe an existing mole has changed in shape, colour, or size. Guessing you want an accurate diagnosis—and quick? But who’s the best person to see for a thorough skin examination?

For most people, their local GP is the go-to for any immediate health matters. Some GPs specialise in skin health and can perform a skin examination. Yet, if melanoma or skin cancer is suspected it’s highly likely you’ll be referred to a dermatologist or skin cancer clinic, like MoleMap, for a skin check or mole check and dermatologist diagnosis.

Dermatologists are skin specialists. But a referral is often needed, and the wait time can be weeks or even months. When you have a suspicious spot staring you in the face, the last thing you want to do is wait.

There’s also the option of a GP-led skin cancer clinic. Here, the GPs have special training in skin cancer diagnosis and treatment.

MoleMap skin cancer clinics combine the expertise of melanographers with the specialist skill of dermatologists. Your suspicious spot will be checked and double checked. No referral necessary, which means you get accurate results faster. Read more about your skin cancer check options.

Can my GP remove skin cancer?

Plus Iconminus Icon

GPs with specialist training may remove potentially cancerous skin lesions. This is, typically, only the case for small, non-melanoma cancers such as basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). If melanoma is suspected, it’s likely you will be referred to a dermatologist or melanoma clinic to confirm the diagnosis.

How long does a MoleMap skin examination take?

Plus Iconminus Icon

Our SkinCheck service takes around 15-20 minutes. SkinCheck+, which includes adding full body photography, takes 20-30 minutes. And our most comprehensive service, the Full Body MoleMap, takes approximately 50 minutes, depending on the number of moles you have.

No matter which skin service you choose, the process is thorough, non-invasive, and painless. Don’t worry, your modesty is protected at all times, and you can keep your underwear on.

Which skin service is best for me?

Plus Iconminus Icon

Full Body MoleMap is our most comprehensive skin cancer detection service. It includes an entire-body skin assessment along with total body photography, and unlimited free spot checks for 12 months. This service is ideal if you have a high number of moles and want to reduce your risk and proactively monitor your skin for early signs of skin cancer.

Our SkinCheck includes a thorough head-to-toe assessment of your moles, with any atypical lesions imaged and sent for dermatologist diagnosis. This service is ideal if you have a small number of moles and want the reassurance that your skin is healthy. Or, if you’ve spotted a suspicious mole and want a quick and accurate diagnosis.

Want the peace of mind of full body photography, but don’t feel that you need a Full Body MoleMap. Opt for the SkinCheck+. This includes a complete head-to-toe skin assessment. Any suspect moles are imaged and sent for dermatologist diagnosis. However, you also get full body photography. This means you can track and compare your skin and moles over time.
