What's the cost of a skin cancer check in Sydney?

The cost of a skin cancer check in Sydney typically ranges from $99 to $399, depending on the type of service and provider. For more information on the pricing and what's included in your MoleMap Sydney CBD skin cancer check, visit our services page.

Note: Some private health insurers may cover part of the cost.

Talk to your local MoleMap clinic about the option of Afterpay.

Are skin cancer checks in Sydney covered by Medicare?

Skin checks in Sydney (or anywhere in Australia, for that matter) performed by a GP may be covered, if not fully - in part, by Medicare. While a GP can examine any lesions of concern, depending on their experience and training, they may refer you to a dermatologist for diagnosis. Providing you have a referral, Medicare may cover some of the costs of your dermatologist appointment.

The benefit of a MoleMap skin check is that your skin is assessed by a melanographer who’s specially trained in skin cancer detection. Plus, if a suspicious mole is detected it is imaged and sent electronically for dermatologist diagnosis. All in the one appointment. No referral needed. You may also be able to claim part or all of the cost of your MoleMap Sydney skin check on your private health insurance. Check with your policy holder before booking your treatment. What do I need to do prior to my skin cancer check up in Sydney?

Before attending your skin cancer clinic Sydney CBD, we recommend doing an at-home skin assessment and noting any spots of concern.

Our melanographer (registered nurse trained in the early detection of skin cancer) will check these out as part of a thorough skin examination. When preparing for your appointment, we advise wearing clothing that can easily be removed. It’s best to be make-up free and to avoid using self-tan or nail polish prior to your mole check.

What should I look for when doing a DIY skin examination?

When doing an at-home skin examination, the symptoms of skin cancer to watch for include:

  • A spot which is sore, itchy, or bleeding and doesn't heal within a few weeks
  • A spot or mole that changes in size, shape, colour or texture
  • A spot that looks different from other lesions on your body
  • A new mole
  • A spot or mole that displays multiple colours, which can be a warning sign of melanoma or other skin cancers
  • A mole larger than a pencil eraser (about 6mm) is also a warning sign

Identifying pre cancerous lesions during self-exams can help with early detection and intervention.

How often should I get a skin check?

Regular professional skin checks are recommended annually, or more frequently if at high risk. Remember, melanoma and non melanoma skin cancers can look different from one person to the next. If you suspect a cancerous mole, get it checked out promptly. The good news is that most skin cancers can be successfully treated when detected in the early stages.

What’s the difference between a skin check and mole mapping?

At MoleMap, our skin checks and mole mapping are performed by melanographers. These are specialists trained in the early detection of skin cancer. Both services include a comprehensive head-to-toe skin check. Any suspicious moles are imaged using a high quality digital camera and sent for dermatologist diagnosis.

The difference with mole mapping is that it uses the latest technology to map the moles on your body, creating a baseline record of your skin. This helps to spot skin cancer earlier and with a high level of accuracy.

What is the ABCDE rule for the early detection of skin cancer detection?

The ABCDE rule can be used in DIY self-exams to help spot the early melanoma symptoms. It includes checking for asymmetry, border irregularities, colour and size changes.

Find out more about the 7 signs of skin cancer (AKA the ABCDEFG rule). If you notice any of these signs in a mole or spot, get a professional skin check and diagnosis without delay.

Remember, early detection of melanoma and other skin cancers significantly improves treatment outcome.

What are the treatment options for skin cancer?

Treatment for skin cancer depends on the type, size, depth, and location of the lesion. Common skin cancer treatment options include:

  • Surgical excision – the most common and effective treatment, especially for deeper or more advanced cancers
  • Topical treatments – creams or gels used for superficial skin cancers
  • Cryotherapy – freezing off abnormal cells with liquid nitrogen (used for early-stage, pre cancerous lesions)
  • Photodynamic therapy – less commonly used, but may be recommended in specific cases

The best outcomes happen when skin cancer is caught early—so regular skin checks are essential.

What are the main types of skin cancer?

Australia’s most common skin cancers include basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma.

Basal cell carcinomas are the most common and tend to grow slowly.

Squamous cell carcinomas are the second most common cancer and can spread to nearby lymph nodes if left untreated.

Melanoma, the third most common cancer, is considered the most dangerous type of skin cancer due to its potential to spread quickly.

Early diagnosis is key to successful treatment.
