Your QLD skin check questions, answered

What's the cost of a skin check in Queensland?

The cost of a skin check can vary across Australia. At MoleMap, the price of our skin check will depend on the type of service you choose. Visit our 'Services' page for prices. At MoleMap Queensland skin cancer clinics, choose from one of three services:

Where can I get a MoleMap skin check in QLD?

Currently, we have two convenient locations:

  • Brisbane — at The Watkins Specialist Centre, Level 2, Suite 45/225 Wickham Terrace, Spring Hill.
  • Townsville—Level 2, Suite 6/281-285 Ross River Road, Aitkenville.

What happens during a routine skin check?

During your MoleMap mole check in QLD, your skin is examined from head to toe. Our melanographers use a dermatoscope to spot suspicious lesions or other skin cancer symptoms. This improves the chances of detecting skin cancer early—when it's most treatable. Regular skin checks can help identify common skin cancers like basal cell carcinoma or squamous cell carcinoma, as well as rarer forms.

How long does an appointment take?

The length of appointment will depend on the skin check service you choose.

Can you go to a GP for a mole check?

Yes, you can visit your general practitioner (GP) for a mole check in QLD, Australia. If a suspicious mole is identified, your GP may refer you to a dermatologist for further evaluation and management.

However, at MoleMap, no referral is needed to access a dermatologist diagnosis. Our skin checks include a comprehensive skin exam by a trained melanographer, with any 'at-risk' moles imaged and sent directly to a dermatologist for diagnosis. This reduces the wait times and additional costs associated with specialist consultations—and gives you peace of mind quickly.

Is mole mapping worth it?

Mole mapping in QLD is highly beneficial, especially given the state's high incidence of skin cancer. MoleMap's Full Body MoleMap combines a comprehensive skin check with full-body photography and dermatologist diagnosis. The digital photographs create a baseline reference of your skin so you can track, compare and monitor your skin over time. This helps to spot skin cancer early, when treatment is most successful.

What are the early signs of skin cancer?

Early signs of skin cancer can include:

  • new or changing skin lesions
  • sores that don’t heal
  • moles that change in shape, colour, or size

Basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma may look different, but any unusual or suspicious lesions should be assessed promptly. A professional skin check is essential for early detection and effective management.

Can a skin cancer clinic diagnose and treat skin cancer?

Yes, a dedicated skin cancer clinic can provide skin cancer diagnosis, perform biopsies, and some may offer treatment. Many clinics use advanced technology and have highly qualified skin cancer doctors trained in skin cancer medicine to ensure patients' timely and effective treatment of melanoma and non melanoma skin cancers.

What are the treatment options for skin cancer?

Skin cancer treatment options depend on the type and stage of skin cancer. Common treatments include surgery, cryotherapy, and topical skin cancer medicine. Thanks to advancing technology, newer approaches may be offered for more precise management of skin conditions such as cancer. Once a diagnosis is confirmed, patients receive a personalised plan. Your doctor will discuss costs and answer any questions you might have.

How can I reduce my risk of skin cancer?

Caring for your skin health starts with smart skin care and sun safety habits. This is especially important in Australia, where skin cancer rates are among the highest in the world. To lower your risk:

  • Apply broad-spectrum SPF50+ sunscreen daily
  • Wear protective clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses
  • Stay in the shade during peak UV times
  • Avoid using tanning beds
  • Monitor your skin for new or changing moles or spots

Just as important as prevention is early detection. Having regular skin checks at a trusted skin cancer clinic helps catch problems early—before they become serious. MoleMap Australia focuses on detecting and managing skin conditions early, so you can stay proactive about your skin health and wellbeing.
