95% of skin cancers can be cured. If found early

Australia has some of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. With extreme UV levels year-round, your skin is constantly at risk—even if you don’t spend much time outdoors. It’s easy to put off booking a skin check, but delays can mean skin cancer goes unnoticed until it becomes harder to treat.

At MoleMap Belconnen, we offer a thorough, top-to-toe skin cancer check designed to give you clarity and peace of mind. Our melanographers image any suspicious moles and send them directly to a dermatologist for diagnosis—no referral needed. With annual professional skin checks plus at-home monitoring, you can greatly improve your chances of catching skin cancer early, when it’s most treatable. Schedule your Belconnen skin check today.

Your skin’s safest choice: Belconnen skin cancer clinic, specialists in early detection

Your questions, answered

How is MoleMap Skin Cancer Clinic Belconnen different from other skin check clinics?

At MoleMap, we’ve been detecting skin cancers since 2005. Our comprehensive skin cancer checks and mole monitoring system (part of our Full Body MoleMap service) ensure that fewer skin cancers are missed in routine skin checks.

Additionally, our skin examinations are performed by melanographers. These are healthcare professionals who are trained in the early detection of melanoma and other types of skin cancers. Any suspicious moles are dermoscopically imaged and sent to an accredited dermatologist for further review and diagnosis (no referral needed or lengthy wait).

That’s two sets of expert eyes for added reassurance. And that’s what makes a skin check at our Canberra skin cancer clinic in Belconnen so effective.

How much does a skin check cost?

Costs vary based on the service you choose. At MoleMap we have three options, based on your needs: a SkinCheck, SkinCheck+ and Full Body MoleMap.

Compare prices and inclusions on our services page.

How long do skin cancer checks take at MoleMap Belconnen?

The length of appointment will depend on the skin check service you select.

  • A Full Body MoleMap takes up to 50 minutes.
  • A MoleMap Skin Check+ takes up to 30 minutes.
  • A MoleMap SkinCheck takes up to 20 minutes.

How often should I get a skin check?

Professional skin exams are recommended at least every 12 months to optimise early detection. For people at medium to high risk of skin cancer, we recommend a Full Body MoleMap, which includes total body photography and mole mapping for ongoing skin surveillance. In between visits to MoleMap Belconnen, it’s a good idea to perform at-home skin assessments every three months.

Who should have regular skin checks?

We recommend that everyone should have an annual professional skin cancer check. Anyone with heightened risk factors should have more frequent checks. This includes having:

  • Fair skin
  • Numerous moles
  • Extensive UV exposure
  • A family history of skin cancer
  • A job/hobby that means spending a large amount of time outdoors

Your personal skin cancer risk level ultimately determines the ideal frequency.

At what age should you get a skin cancer check?

There’s no age limit for skin cancer checks. To keep your skin safe, we recommend booking an annual skin check from adulthood onwards. Everyone should have a regular skin assessment, but it’s particularly important if you have a family history of skin cancer, as this puts you at higher risk of skin cancer.

Can skin cancer be detected early in a skin clinic?

Yes. Professional skin cancer checks by a trained melanographer or dermatologist can identify early signs of melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers, often before symptoms appear, significantly improving treatment success.

What's the best way to prevent skin cancer?

Using sun protection measures and staying proactive with regular checks offers the best protection against skin cancer. This includes:

  • Applying broad-spectrum SPF50+ sunscreen every day
  • Wearing clothing to cover as much skin as possible, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses
  • Seeking shade during peak UV hours
  • Avoiding tanning beds and deliberate sunbathing
  • Performing at-home skin exams and booking regular professional assessments

At our skin cancer clinic, dedicated healthcare professionals can assess your personal risk, provide prevention advice tailored to your skin type and lifestyle. Prevention is the first line of defence, and when combined with early detection, it leads to the best possible outcome.

What is the difference between melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers?

Melanoma is less common but highly dangerous as it can quickly spread. It accounts for around 3% of skin cancer cases but  more than 65% of related deaths. Early detection dramatically improves survival.

Non‑melanoma skin cancers (NMSC) include basal cell carcinoma (BCC), accounting for more than 70% of NMSCs, and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), accounting for around 30%. These are more common, slower to spread, and often highly treatable when found early.

What do cancerous moles look like?

Warning signs of skin cancer include:

  • A new mole or one that stands out (the “ugly duckling”)
  • Moles that change in size, colour, shape, or texture
  • Lesions that bleed, itch, or become raised

These are early indicators that warrant a professional skin check. Noticed something unusual? Book a skin check at MoleMap Belconnen now.
