Sunburn can double your risk of skin cancer

Brisbane boasts a warm climate and tropical beaches, but it’s also recognised as the ‘Skin cancer capital of the world’. This is because excessive sun exposure can drastically increase the risk of melanoma and other skin cancers.  This makes getting a skin check a must.

At Brisbane skin cancer clinic, we don’t just check. We double check.  Following a thorough head-to-toe skin examination. Any suspicious moles are imaged and sent for dermatologist diagnosis. That’s two sets of expert eyes for the highest accuracy.

“At my annual full body skin exam, the melanographer found a small pin-sized spot on my ear and recommended I have it examined further. It turned out to be cancerous. If it wasn’t for MoleMap, it would have gone unnoticed.”

Your questions, answered

What’s the cost of a mole check Brisbane?

At Brisbane skin cancer clinic, the cost of our skin check services depends on whether you opt for a SkinCheck or Full Body MoleMap.

The Full Body MoleMap is our most comprehensive mole check service. It includes a thorough skin assessment with full body imaging, proactive monitoring of 'potentially at risk' moles, and free spot checks for 12 months.

Skin check is intended for people at low risk or who have spotted a new or changing mole. There's the option to have it with or without full-body imaging. For an overview of our services including prices and what exactly is included, see our full table of services.

How should I prepare for my Brisbane skin cancer check?

Before attending your appointment at our Brisbane skin check clinic, we recommend examining your skin and noting any spots of concern. At your molescreen you’ll need to undress down to your underwear. It’s best to wear clothing that can easily be removed. It’s best not to wear make-up and to avoid using fake-tan or nail polish prior to your Brisbane mole check.

Haven’t had a mole check before? That’s okay. Our friendly melanographers will ensure you feel relaxed throughout your appointment.

How does sunburn increase your risk of skin cancer?

Excessive UV exposure damages the skin’s cells and causes inflammation. Cellular damage can stop the cells from repairing properly. It can also cause the cells to mutate and become cancerous.

We know that sunburn is a leading cause in the majority of cases of basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma. Protecting your skin against UV damage is one of the best ways to reduce your risk of skin cancer.

What are some warning signs of melanoma?

Knowing the ABCDE + EFG rule can help you to spot the early signs of melanoma.

  • Asymmetrical in shape
  • Borders are irregular
  • Colours are uneven or unusual
  • Diameter is growing
  • Evolving shape
  • + Elevated
  • Firm to touch
  • Growth is rapid

Even with regular at-home skin checks, it’s not always easy or possible to detect signs of skin cancer. This is why we recommend an annual mole check at Brisbane skin cancer clinic.
